On November 25, 2025, Orange the World Day, the artwork will be unveiled A Minute of Shelter by visual artist Narges Mohammadi was unveiled on the Coolsingel. The work was inspired by the death of 16-year-old Humeyra, who was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend at her school in Rotterdam in 2018. She was no exception: femicide, the killing of women by men simply because they are women, is unfortunately common worldwide, including in our country. A year later, the city council passed a motion to commemorate Humeyra and all other victims of (domestic) violence against women. A Minute of Shelter raises awareness for women and girls who are, have been, or will be in unsafe situations. Unfortunately, the problem of violence against women is always and everywhere relevant. The Rotterdam region leads the way in our country when it comes to domestic violence. After a selection process, visual artist Narges Mohammadi was chosen by BKOR and SIR, in collaboration with the Municipality of Rotterdam, to design this memorial. Domestic violence turns what should be "home" into a place to flee from. Mohammadi designed a wall that depicts what many consider the only safe place in a house: the bathroom, with a lockable door. The artwork, made of red brick, has two distinct sides: an exterior and an interior where the objects bulge or recede. Because the elements are life-size, you can imagine yourself in the resulting space, whether inside or outside. The bag on the floor refers to insecurity and escape: everything essential to your survival must fit in that one bag.
