In 2007, the art event Folly Dock took place at Heijplaats, at a time when art events and studio tours were frequently organized from the artists' studios there (initiated by Lowieke Duran). The exhibition originated as a design competition, with the brief being to design a folly within the context of the Rotterdam port area. A folly is a decorative structure without a clear function, often with an eccentric or unusual design. This Container origami is one of 45 completed designs and has stood on the verge of Waalhavenweg, at the exit to Heijplaat, since 2007. It marks the entrance to this harbor-connected residential area. The artwork was designed by a special collaboration between artist Ron Nout, architect Femke Bijlsma, and designers (and brothers) Wouter and Allard Roeterink. The quartet's starting point was to cut open and unfold the familiar shipping container, treating it like a piece of paper, creating a seven-meter-high steel eye-catcher. It strikes a balance between design, architecture, and art. Container origami is a graceful artistic commentary on the surrounding harbours, where everything revolves around scale and functionality.
