About the artwork
This work The black-tailed godwit on the egg made by artist Leo van Oudheusden in the early 1970s, when he was busy with assignments for schoolyards that he conceived as environmental design. As a sculptor, he placed a bronze statue of a black-tailed godwit at the centre of this. The somewhat abstract bird sits on a white concrete upright egg. Around the black-tailed godwit, there are three more white eggs in the grass. The suggestion is given that the young bird has just hatched from the egg, as can be seen from the shells around it. The theme fits in well with a nursery and/or primary school, where children grow up. This work was designed as a play area and originally stood in a sandbox on a schoolyard, but was later moved to this location near primary school De Phoenix. Playground equipment in the form of a seesaw was also added at a later stage.
