Visual artist Ingrid Kruit was commissioned in the early 1980s to create a play object for three children's farms in Rotterdam. She created this work for De Blijde Wei in Ommoord, The chicken. She made a Barneveld chicken with a body of wood and metal legs, and two cream-colored concrete eggs. The original chicken was a black/brown chicken, but over the past forty years the chicken has been renovated and changed color several times. During the World Cup she was once painted orange, but in recent years she has been white with yellow legs. In 2014, Stichting De Witte Bollen The chicken embraces and takes on the management and maintenance. Stichting De Witte Bollen is a residents' foundation led by Peter Buisman, which is committed to the management and maintenance of a number of works of art in Ommoord. The foundation is named after the work of art The white spheres by Hans van der Plas. The De Witte Bollen Foundation has raised money in recent years through various campaigns to The chicken, now renamed The Ommoord chicken, to be refurbished and restored. In 2021, the artwork was recreated by artist Danny van Walsum. The chicken at the entrance of the De Blijde Weide petting zoo there remains a popular climbing and playing object for children.
Ingrid Kruit (Rotterdam, 1943) is a monumental artist, sculptor, glass painter and draughtsman. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. Kruit has worked on commission for the Municipality of Rotterdam several times. In a letter from 1974 she mentions 46 commissions, of which more than thirty in Rotterdam and mostly commissions for schools. She worked in various techniques. For various nursery schools she made cheerful murals with animals or more Cobra-like figures. She adapted her style to the target groups. Later in the seventies her designs became more environmental art and she also made designs for schoolyards. Kruit made a play object for three children's farms in Rotterdam, namely a goose, rabbit and chicken.
