This artwork on the 1st Katendrechtse Hoofd depicts a profession from the history of the port. The artist was asked to research the background and history of Katendrecht and to come up with a theme in consultation with residents. Yair Aschkenasy's design was chosen from two other proposals. Aschkenasy was inspired by a very old occupation from the port, namely the rowers who tied the heavy lines of cargo and passenger ships to the buoys in all weathers. The rowers are executed in cubist, expressionist style. Three of the rowers pull their belts, which are styled into a triangular shape. The fourth man releases a bunch. The tough men with cap and rolled up sleeves look undisturbed over the water.
Yair Aschkenasy (Amsterdam, 1963) lives in Amsterdam. From 1987 to 1992 he followed a training for plastic design at the formal Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Constantijn Huygens in Kampen and Zwolle. His images have a figurative plastic and sometimes also linguistic character.
