The last remaining cast-iron chair by artist Mathieu Ficheroux was installed at the St. Laurentius Roman Catholic Cemetery on May 30, 2008. Ficheroux created the chair in a series of 24 in the late 1970s, commissioned by the Rotterdam Art Foundation. These chairs were placed in various locations around the Coolsingel, but almost all were stolen or vandalized. The last chair has been recovered and stands in the cemetery's urn garden. The work is on loan to St. Laurentius.
About the artist
Mathieu Ficheroux (Rotterdam, 1926 - Rotterdam, 2003) studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. In 1969 he was awarded the Rotterdam Hendrik Chabot Prize. Eroticism and alienation formed a thematic undertone in Ficheroux 'pink and brown paintings, his plastic objects and his light reliefs (sleeping pieces) in the XNUMXs. In the XNUMXs he depicted transience in frames and damaged paintings. Since the eighties, Ficheroux again concentrated mainly on painting and drawing.
