In 1960, the public primary school 'De Wilgenhoek' on the Wilgenlei in Schiebroek was opened. Sculptor Chris Elffers was commissioned to create a work of art during the construction of this school. He made this sculpture, which is still beautifully visible on the facade after all these years, from white and brown chamotte clay. The architecture consists of two layers, which are separated by a white horizontal concrete edge (lintel). The architect of the school building - probably in agreement with Elffers - made the white edge protrude slightly, so that it forms the surface for the artwork. There is a row of nine on the edge Animal figures, all depicted at the same height. The artist has played with depth, making it seem as if there is another row behind the front row. From left to right we see a bird, fish, worm, turtle, chicken, lizard, bat, duck and owl. Elffers has depicted all kinds of flowers and leaves between and behind the animals. The strip has been applied over the entire facade, creating a beautiful whole next to the entrance of the school. For primary school students, it has been a beautiful and educational illustration of the flora and fauna that can be found around their school building for many years. Islamic primary school Isra has been located here since 2021.
