On July 15, 2000, a memorial monument was unveiled in the Middachtenplantsoen in memory of Dwight (Dimitri Ramon) Pollack. Pollack was a very talented basketball player from the Beverwaard and played basketball at a high level in America. He was scouted by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and would receive a professional contract. On October 22, 1999, he died suddenly from diabetes. The monument is placed on the edge of the basketball court where he used to play. Since 2003, he has been commemorated annually on Dwight Memorial Day. His motto - 'you can achieve anything, if you just work hard enough for it' - is kept alive by means of that day. On Dwight Memorial Day, young talents can present themselves with a game of basketball on the basketball court. There is also football, food, drinks and music. This monument is an anchor point. It is a figurative work of two hands holding a basketball, placed on a white pedestal on which a plaque is attached. For the neighborhood and the residents this is an important image in the Beverwaard.
