This glass mosaic is installed in the facade of the HAL apartment building on Oldegaarde in Pendrecht. On July 16, 1957, the foundation stone was laid for this apartment building, which was to contain a total of 81 homes for personnel working for the Holland-America Line. The building was constructed by the Holland-America Line Pension Fund and is a design by architect Wim Wissing. The depicted panorama shows the HAL as the focal point by showing a ship between the cities of New York (left) and Rotterdam (right). Hotel New York is beautifully rendered in the mosaic on the green and white Rotterdam flag. The mosaic is a fine application with a certain lightness in the composition, in the impressionistic-looking color schemes, and in the linearity. Wavy lines are used only in the small cloud above. The apartment building featuring the mosaic was completed in 1959. In 2015, the homeowners' association of the apartment building allocated funds to restore the artwork, which was carried out by Ruud and Monica of the smithy and mosaic house In Vuur en Vlam.
