In 1955, Het Vrije Volk reported that the 'For those who fell' committee had again rejected the design of (municipal) architect Henk Sutterland. Plans had been submitted for years, but apparently they were rejected time and time again. Money was available for an eight-meter high memorial needle, but Sutterland senior ultimately replaced it with a white travertine column topped by a bronze flower box, after which the design was approved. In 1955 it was possible Memorial Overschie 1940-1945 be opened. On one of the sides of the column there is a plaque with the names of the 62 Jewish residents who were murdered in Auschwitz, Sobibor, Mauthausen, Central Europe and one in Leusden and Vught. The youngest was 1 year old, the oldest was 78 years old. Above the list of names it reads: Overseas villagers who were killed during 1940-1945 solely because of being Jews. Below the list of names is the text: Because this should never happen again. The column with flower box is in a bed surrounded by a low white fence. On the other side of Saenredamplein there is a 'Juliana tree' in a similar white fence. Trees were planted for Princess Juliana in honor of her birth in 1909 and in honor of her marriage in 1937. This Juliana tree was removed by the NSB in 1941. As part of this memorial, the old tree was replaced by a new tree.
Henk (Hendrik) Sutterland (Koudenkerk aan den Rijn, 1889 – Rotterdam, 1964) was an architect. He was a municipal architect for the municipality of Rotterdam, but also (or alternately) had his own architectural firm, Architectenbureau Sutterland, with his two sons Huib (H2) and Hendrik Jr. (H3). In 1942 he designed emergency housing for bombed Rotterdam. There is a lot of housing construction by him in the city, including in Kralingen, Overschie, Bospolder-Tussendijken and Blijdorp.
