The benches by Guido Marsille and objets trouvés by Onno Poiesz together form an installation in which incongruity plays a role. On the one hand, it is a friendly arrangement of two objects with benches, but the interventions of both artists are also foreign to the place: the benches are artificial tree trunks, not real benches, the boots and a gem seem to be lost. The boots seem like an everyday sight, but are surrealistically upside down, lost. The stone has something of a gem, as befits a chic neighborhood, but is also semi-abstract. The collective title of the work Kryptonian Ice Lake refers to the comic hero Superman and the painting 'Ice Sea' by Casper David Friedrich and thus to Romanticism. Poiesz sculptures, objet trouvés, appeal to fantasy, just as the comic does. The tree trunk benches refer to the fashion in the 19th century to imitate nature with papier-mâché-like materials. All this makes this a funny and unorthodox seating area full of recognizable elements, inviting to sit. The work is part of the Singelplan: an art project along the canals in Noord, which includes a work by Henk Visch and Klaas Gubbels. By inviting you to sit down and relax, this work fits in with the ideas of the girths and girth art: look and relax. This is a reaction against the hectic pace of the city and it is a means of emphasizing people's beautiful historic surroundings.
Onno Poiesz (1974) is a Rotterdam artist. He studied at the St. Joost Academy in Breda (in the direction of Monumental Art) and at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Poiesz chooses symbols of modern times as his subject. In 2006 he marked the facade of the old Central Station of Rotterdam with the letters EXIT in adhesive plastic.
Guido Marsille (Boskoop, 1967) is an environmental artist, sculptor and designer. He makes under the name Buro Marsille installations and installations in buildings and in public spaces, in which the creation of places to stay, cohesion and commitments play a role through spatial interventions. He went through the AKI in Enschede and works and lives in Rotterdam.
