In the old days people had a good view of the old Maas bridges from the Boompjes. After these have been replaced by the new Willems Bridge and supplemented with the new Erasmus Bridge, the artists of Kunst & Vaarwerk (Cor Kraat, Hans Citroen and Willem van Drunnen) came up with the idea of creating a work of art that still gives the passer-by an impression of the view. on the former Maas. Kunst & Vaarwerk designed a construction that protrudes above the quay wall and placed a model of the old Maas bridges on top. By taking the correct position, the passer-by can drop the model of the old Maas bridges in front of the site of the existing new bridge. This creates a reconstruction of how the view used to be.
Kunst & Vaarwerk was an artist group consisting of Cor Kraat (1946), Hans Citroen (1946) and Willem van Drunen (1947) and existed from 1979 to 1992. Kunst & Vaarwerk was a Dutch pop-art variant, which hit back with humor and irony to the harsh urbanity. The scale of the port city called for an art of stature and brutality, but it is also an art against forgetfulness. The group collaborated with the Rotterdam business community to finance the projects and has realized various works in public space.
