Together with artist Diet Wiegman, students from six primary schools in Overschie created this statue. It Liberation and reconstruction monument was founded on Ziedewijstraat to mark fifty years of freedom and reconstruction. It was unveiled in May 1995. From the front, the facade of an apartment building is depicted with the word 'monument'. Emphasis has been placed on the letters 'now' by placing them in blue and horizontally in contrast to the other white and vertically placed letters. The front is sleek and neat, but the back is rough like a cave or archaeological find – or is it decay? Wiegman loves contradictions and a sense of cycles and changeability in his work.
Diet Wiegman (Schiedam, 1944) is a Rotterdam artist who makes installations and sculptures. He is the son of artist Doop Wiegman and father of artist Mike Redman. The objects he designs for public space are never finished: he sees every change, due to wear and tear, as part of the image. Wiegman often designs shadow images: he models shards and waste in such a way that the shadow of the object is a perfect one David from Michelangelo. His various shadow sculptures are inspired by classical and famous images. He also works with ceramics: he translates drawings into a ceramic form, whereby the nature of the drawing is preserved in the ceramic end result.
