A residential complex has stood at Van Beethovensingel numbers 9 through 31 in Hillegersberg since 1957, likely designed by architect JWC (Joost) Boks. The complex has two entrances. To the left of each entrance, an identical mosaic was created by sculptor Joan Bakker, who produced several works for Rotterdam. The two identical mosaics depict a stork amidst waves, reeds, leaves, and flowers. Bakker created a decorative design that possesses a certain expression in its angular lines, thereby asserting a visual presence while also reinforcing the horizontal layering of the architecture. Bakker was a well-known sculptor and mosaic artist in Rotterdam in the 1950s, whose art in and on buildings was primarily functional, employing a modest, stylized visual language. He worked with a nuanced and subtle color palette.
