This spatial sculpture by Piet Killaars, Spiral II called, consists of curved V-shapes, which have been pushed together to form a round shape, in a not completely closed circle. Killaars often worked with abstract shapes, which seem to have an organic aspect. According to the artist, nature is a machine and by repeating various geometric elements, he creates a movement that represents growth and development. The growth process in nature is said to take place according to a code. Killaars gives his vision of that code by depicting shapes that seem to be going through a growth process. The sculpture was commissioned by the municipality of Rotterdam in collaboration with the shopkeepers' association for the Boulevard-Zuid shopping promenade. Spiral II was later moved when it became too much packed with flower boxes, posts and other street furniture.
