This bronze plastic of a seated Thomas More on a concrete base was created in 1970. Artist Huib Noorlander was commissioned by the school board to create a work in the percentage scheme during the construction of the school. Logically, he made a sculpture of this British scholar for the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. Thomas More (England, 1478 – 1535) was a well-known humanist, philosopher and statesman. He wrote the book Utopia, in which he describes the political system of an ideal non-existent island state. More became friends with Desiderius Erasmus. He often stayed at More's home and wrote the book there in 1509 Praise of Foolishness, which was dedicated to Thomas More.
Huib Noorlander (Schiebroek, 1928 – Nijmegen, 2004) was a figurative sculptor. He founded the artist group in 1951 together with artists Louis van Roode, Jan Burgerhout, Kees Franse, Jan Goedhart, Charles Kemper and Ed van Zanden Argus on. On the occasion of the 100 anniversary of the Holland America Line, he made a picture of it Cauldron Twinkle (1973). A well-known image in Rotterdam, a replica of which is in the Maritime Museum and a reduced version is awarded annually as Ketelbinkie Prize. More than ten statues of Noorlander can be found in Rotterdam. In the 1960s, Noorlander and artist Joeki Simak formed the most famous artist couple in Rotterdam.
