In 1931, the Rotterdam city council commissioned four Rotterdam artists to make keystones for four bridges that would cross the Statensingel. The four Rotterdam artists were Herman Bieling, Leendert Bolle, Hendrik Chabot and Adriaan van der Plas. The sandstone keystones about 85 cm high are located on either side of the bridge. Sculptor Adriaan van der Plas designed two keystones for the Dresselhuys Bridge. The stone is on the western side fishmonger, on the eastern side the stone staring woman. Both stones are signed AvdP. The four bridges have been designated as municipal monuments. See here the keystones made on the other bridges by Herman Bieling, Leendert Bolle en Henry Chabot.
Adriaan van der Plas (Rotterdam, 1899 – Kerkrade, 1974) specialized in religious art and design. He studied at the Rotterdam Art Academy. Van der Plas received a bronze medal for nude figure drawing and received a Royal Grant three times. From 1921 to 1923, he made study trips throughout Europe and then settled permanently in Rotterdam. He drew delicately and carefully, creating prints and paintings, including murals for De Doelen in 1935 and a Stations of the Cross for St. Bavo's Church in Heemstede. In 1940, he created the mural Viribus Unitis in front of the emergency store of the Jungerhans family on Mathenesserlaan. Read here an article about this artist.
