This plastic is called Waterdiabolo, like the well-known toys, but looks a lot more serious than that. It is a large and robust water sculpture, but it also has some very stylized basic forms of old architecture, with its plinth and facade crowning. Water flows inside the sculpture. The image creates a water-rich 'home' for moss and algae growth. More than ten years after this work, Hans van Lunteren would design another underground fountain for Kralingen, namely the artwork Sunken fountain.
Hans van Lunteren (Alkmaar, 1945 – Utrecht, 2025) attended the art academy in Den Bosch. As a sculptor and conceptual artist, his concepts mainly focused on the substantive relationship that the work has with the environment in which it is situated. He taught at the art academy in Kampen and was a much sought-after artist for designs in public spaces. Since training as a gardener from 2005 to 2009, he expanded his assignments to include greenery and environmental design. In November 2024, Van Lunteren won with his project Coincidentally Green, Seedlings of the City the GDO public award for innovative and impactful projects.
