Jeroen Doorenweerd is a nationally operating artist who has created numerous intelligent interventions in public spaces. He always responds to the environment. This was also his starting point for this art commission, which ran parallel to The SingelplanFrom 2000 to 2015, the Municipality of Rotterdam renovated the canals based on an 1842 design by Rotterdam's city architect, Willem Nicolaas Rose (1801-1877). Parallel to this renovation, CBK Rotterdam was commissioned to implement an art plan. Part of this plan was commissioning artists to create seating areas for reflection and relaxation, as the canals, with their 19e-century beauty invites us to do so. Doorenweerd has responded by creating a small theater on the Bergsingel quay. The bench on the bridge over the Noordsingel serves a similar function. The eight benches on the quay, as well as the 20-meter-long bench on the bridge, are on the one hand a reference to fishermen who often sit by the water, and on the other hand, they offer a place for contemplation. It is located near the text work by Marcelle van Bemmel, which offers poetry for reflection and is also part of The Singelplan.
Video artist, sculptor, installation and conceptual artist Jeroen Doorenweerd (Terneuzen, 1962) studied at the art academy in Tilburg and Ateliers '63 in Haarlem. He was taught by René Daniels and Marlene Dumas, among others. His work, often commissioned, is at the intersection of art, architecture and landscape.
