A work of art was requested for the forecourt of the police station south of the main entrance. Artist Bob Bonies designed a powerful vertically oriented plastic for this; a visual center that defines the surrounding space. Bonies wanted elements from the building, such as a roof and a staircase, to be reflected in the image. The dimensions of this image therefore match the pattern of the building. Furthermore, the artist was inspired by iconic elements from Hoogvliet and Rotterdam (such as harbor elements and cranes). This statue is a typical example of environmental art from the 80s.
Bob Bonies (The Hague, 1937) was educated at the Free Academy and the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and Stockholm. He carried out assignments for, among others, the ministries of WVC and VROM, NS, PTT and various municipalities such as Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. He was an advisor to the State and various municipalities, as well as to the Arts Council. He was also director of the Free Academy in The Hague. Bonies was a member of the Liga Nieuwe Beelden.
