About the artwork
The schoolyard of the Pierre Bayle public primary school (formerly De Waaier) has five vertical shapes in the schoolyard. The artwork was created in 1985 by visual artist Berend Peter. The five columns run from approximately 1 meter to 4 meters in height. They are all different in shape and made of painted steel plate. The smallest is green / yellow, in addition white / green, orange / red, gray / white and the last form runs from light blue to darker blue. The shapes are lined up in the schoolyard and are made in the percentage scheme during the construction of the school. In 1983-1984 the complex was built as a primary school and community center by the architectural firm Van den Broek & Bakema. The Rotterdam Percentage Regulation Committee has asked Berend Peter to make a work for the schoolyard.
About the artist
Visual artist Berend Peter (Zandvoort, 1945 – Veen, 2022) was a sculptor, goldsmith and jewelry designer. He studied from 1963 to 1968 at the Institute for Applied Arts Education, the current Gerrit Rietveld Academy, in Amsterdam. He was a student of sculptor Carel Kneulman. From 1970 to 1995 he was a teacher at the Rietveld Academy. Peter was co-founder of the Union of Rebellious Goldsmiths (BOE group) and he also made furniture. In Amsterdam there are two works of art by Berend Peter in public spaces.
