On the occasion of the official opening of the town hall on Coolsingel in 1920, the inner garden received three monuments, including this sandstone fountain with bronze children by sculptor Simon Miedema. The fountain symbolizes the main sources of existence of the city: trade, fishing and technology. It was a gift from the Maas cities Schiedam, Vlaardingen and Maassluis. The weapons of these cities are depicted around the water basin. To the left of the fountain is a bronze statue of Neptune, to the right of the fountain is the statue Mercury. Both statues were created by sculptor Bon Ingen Housz.
Simon Miedema (Harlingen, 1860 - Rotterdam, 1934) was a Dutch sculptor who studied at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. Miedema was active in an architectural society, to which he was awarded commissions for sculpture and ornamentation in Renaissance and Louis styles. His style remained 19e century. He has made several sculptures in the Maas city, including the facade images of the White House on the Wijnhaven.
