There are two works of art on the facades of the Marconiplein police station. A two-by-three-meter facade relief by sculptor Ian Pieters sits above the entrance on the side of the building. It is an elegant work, in which there is a battle between a centaur and a warrior, or a battle between good and evil. Here, Pieters shows his interest in classical mythology. In the bodies you see a graceful drawing-like detailing. The two figures together give the composition a great dynamic. The relief blends nicely with the architecture of the architect Leo Voskuyl, which has the same fineness with small details in the brick masonry. The work matches the verticality that the architect has also applied with the awning and columns. The other work is beautiful relief by artist Kees Timmer at the front of the building.
Ian Jacob Pieters (Rotterdam, 1925 - Rhoon, 2020) was a Dutch sculptor and medalist and studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Rotterdam. His working life spanned from 1940 to 1996 and mainly took place in Rotterdam. Initially he worked a lot in bronze, but from the eighties he specialized in environmental design. He taught at the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam. On the occasion of its eightieth birthday, Museum Beelden aan Zee organized a retrospective exhibition in 2005.
