In 1949, a special block of homes and shops was completed at Beneden Oostzeedijk 97 to 115. The whole was designed by Kraaijvanger Architects and consists of four blocks with porch houses that are perpendicular to the Beneden Oostzeedijk. The four gables are connected by a shopping arcade on the ground floor. Above the doors of the shops in the gables, four ceramic tile tableaus by the Rotterdam sculptor Adriaan van der Plas have been placed. When you look at the building, from left to right you can see a fish, a bee with flowers and honeycomb, a swan and a galloping horse. Each tableau consists of 9 rectangular tiles with a number of square and rectangular decorative stones on the left and right sides of the illustration, which creates a beautiful frame. The colours are natural and earthy, such as pink, yellow, blue and green. The animals are all depicted in the same soft pink shade, but blue and white have been used in the background for the fish and swan (for water and air). The tableau of the bee sitting between two flowers has a yellow honeycomb in the right corner. A yellow background was also used for the background of the jumping horse. The tableaus are more than 75 years old, but are still beautifully preserved. Adriaan van der Plas has made tile tableaus for several porch houses, such as on the Nieuwe Binnenweg and on the Statensingel and Paetstraat in Noord.
