Date: Thursday, July 25, 2024
Time: 16 a.m. to 17.30 p.m.
Location: recreation room of the Waelestein residential care center, Schulpplein 50
We would like to inform you about the relocation of Two columns, a work of art created by the Rotterdam artist Gust Romijn (1922-2010). In 1977 Two columns created as part of the reconstruction of the Energy Hall near Kleinpolderplein. The statue stood for a period on the Abraham van Stolkweg and later on the Roel Langerakweg, where the two red columns served as a striking entrance to the sports park. In 2016, the artwork was removed for restoration. At the request, we started looking for a new location for the statue, which is part of the Rotterdam statue collection.
The artwork will be placed this fall on the Kromme Zandweg, the street where the artist had his studio and home for a long time. A little further away there has been the red Gust Romijn Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists since 2016.

About the artist
Gust Romijn (1922-2010) was a versatile Dutch artist whose work underwent a remarkable evolution from the expressive, organic forms of the Cobra movement to the sleek, abstract design in public space. His early paintings reflect the dynamic and spontaneous style that was characteristic of Cobra. Later, with works like Two columns (1977), he showed a shift towards a more geometric and spatial approach. He uses vibrant colors and smooth surfaces to explore the interaction between art and environment. No fewer than seven of his works of art can be found in public spaces in Rotterdam.
About the image
Romijn made Two columns as part of the reconstruction of the Energy Hall. The work of art, which was created thanks to the municipal percentage scheme, has had an interesting journey. Due to the demolition of the Energy Hall, the work was moved to the Roel Langerakweg in 2003, and stored and restored in 2016. In 2017, the statue was temporarily loaned to Amsterdam and was on display during the sculpture exhibition ArtZuid. It was then proposed to place the artwork again in the public space near the Gust Romijn Bridge in Charlois, close to Romijn's former home and studio.
