On Sunday, March 8th, BKOR is organizing its sixth annual art walk dedicated to International Women's Day. Join our regular art guide, Anne-Marie Ros, and discover in 10.000 steps how female artists shape the city. This March 8th walk has become an annual tradition and marks the kickoff of this year's walking season.
The theme of International Women's Day 2026 draws attention to the undermining threat of women's rights. This inequality is also visible in public spaces. Although Rotterdam boasts more than a thousand works of art in public spaces, only a modest percentage are created by female artists.
In recent years, there has been a shift in this direction – and we'll walk along that movement together during this walk. Along the way, we'll pass sculptures, monuments, and murals by artists including Narges Mohammadi, Kalliopi Lemos, Maria Roosen, Hülya Yilmaz, Anne Wenzel, and Dalal Mitwally. We'll pause for a moment to reflect on A Minute of Shelter (2025), Narges Mohammadi's new artwork on the Coolsingel, unveiled on November 25, 2025. The sculpture draws attention to women and girls who are, have been, or will be in unsafe situations. On our walk, we'll also see how women themselves are depicted in art and what that says about power, visibility, strength, and vulnerability.

About our art routes
In recent years, BKOR has developed various art routes that lead past many works of art spread throughout the city. All routes are offered as a PDF in Dutch and English via this website, but a foldable map is also still available for free at Rotterdam Tourist Information on Stationsplein. The routes have also been made accessible for your mobile phone without having to download an app. Go to www.bkor.nl/routes, select the route you want to walk or cycle and see where you are on the map.
