On Sunday, May 17, during the Opbouwdagen, BKOR is organizing a guided art walk from Pendrecht to Zuidplein. Led by our regular art guide Anne-Marie Ros and with contributions from Ove Lucas (Director of CBK Rotterdam), we will walk through Pendrecht, a neighborhood that was reimagined after the war by architect Lotte Stam-Beese. Along the way, we will pass the striking St. Bavo Church and other places where architecture, art, and daily life converge – and experience how carefully these neighborhoods were constructed. Light, space, and greenery are no coincidence here. Art, too, can be found everywhere in the neighborhood: in facades, doorways, and squares. Sometimes there from the beginning, sometimes added later. We see it, if we know where to look.

Along the way, we encounter artworks by 'reconstruction artists' such as Loeki Metz, Bob Zijlmans, and Gerard Héman, but also by a younger generation, such as Sarianne Breuker, Anuli Croon, Stang Gubbels, Milou van Ham, and Ben Zegers. Central to this is the question: what function does the large collection of reconstruction art serve in today's Rotterdam? Ove Lucas shows us how these works remain an essential part of the city. There is also time for a meeting with visual artist Karla Kaper at her monumental concrete relief in the Slinge metro station.

About the Build-up Days
From May 15 to 18, Rotterdam celebrates the reconstruction of the city with the Reconstruction Days, organized by Platform Wederopbouw Rotterdam. This event, featuring guided tours and lectures among other things, takes place annually around May 18, the beginning of Rotterdam's rise after the bombing of May 14, 1940. Check the program at wederopbouwrotterdam.nl/opbouwdag.

About our art routes
In recent years, BKOR has developed various art routes that lead past many works of art spread throughout the city. All routes are offered as a PDF in Dutch and English via this website, but a foldable map is also still available for free at Rotterdam Tourist Information on Stationsplein. The routes have also been made accessible for your mobile phone without having to download an app. Go to www.bkor.nl/routes, select the route you want to walk or cycle and see where you are on the map.
