There is an island in a water feature on the Kromme Zandweg in Charlois. Twelve red wooden 'wild' animals have now been made by Ruben La Cruz and Karolien Helweg and have settled on this island. These animals have found refuge on this for one year Animal Island. In the romantic part of Zuiderpark, where Landhuis De Olyphant and Molen De Zandweg can also be found, this island borders on the children's farm De Molenwei. Artist duo commissioned by BKOR La Cruz & Helweg twice before one Animal Island in Rotterdam. The Animal Island forms the basis for educational projects with children from the surrounding schools and neighborhoods. The use of islands in parks evokes the idea of a refuge - a safe haven - for wild animals. As in the zoo, the animals are naturally kept at a distance from the public by a water feature and the island becomes a work of art. The activities for this third edition in collaboration with the nature playground and the Molenwei petting zoo have been suspended due to the corona virus. Keep an eye on this website for news about the Animal Island. View here the video by Rick Messemaker and Rolf Versteeg.
