A monumental work of art by André Volten will soon be on display in Rotterdam again. On Thursday 14 November at 15.00:1964, Sculpture International Rotterdam will celebrate the relocation with a festive programme at the new location in the central reservation of the Dordtselaan, near the Maashaven metro station. The artist created the work in 2018 for the square of the St. Paulusschool. Due to the school's relocation, the work was placed in storage in XNUMX. Because it is an important work of art by a special artist, we have had it carefully restored.

Program
We would like to make a celebratory toast to the restoration and new location of this artwork. The program will start at 15.00:XNUMX with a speech by Cees Paardekooper (board member of the André Volten Foundation) and a lecture by art historian and critic Joke de Wolf. You are most welcome!

About the artwork
The untitled steel artwork is characteristic of the oeuvre of artist André Volten, who made abstract constructions. He has worked with I- and H-profiles in his work several times. The eleven-meter high artwork, which he made during the construction of the St. Paulusschool in 1964, is a more constructivist work compared to other sculptures by Volten in Rotterdam. It is a powerful image of expressive simplicity and three-dimensional lines.

About the artist
André Volten (Andijk, 1925 – Amsterdam, 2002) was one of the most important post-war Dutch sculptors. During his four-year stay in Brussels, he began making abstract expressionist paintings. Once back in Amsterdam, his desire to work in three dimensions grew, strengthened by his activities as a welder at the NDSM shipyard. From 1953 onwards, he was intensively involved with the role of visual art in public space. His numerous constructivist sculptures can be found in several cities in the Netherlands and abroad, seven of which are in Rotterdam.
