For over ten years, the National Moluccan Monument Foundation has strived for the realization of a monument on the Lloydkade in Rotterdam, one of the two places of arrival for the first generation of Moluccans in the Netherlands. The artwork titled Ulu Kora will be inaugurated on Sunday, June 21.
The LMM Foundation launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2021 to realize the monument. Visual artists Jaïr Pattipeilohy and Maurice den Boer have created the design for this with the title Ulu KoraThe work depicts a four-meter-high bow of a traditional Moluccan ship. It will be placed at the Lloydkade in Rotterdam, the location where the first ship carrying Moluccan families arrived in 1951. Of the twelve ships, eight docked in Rotterdam, where the majority of the more than 12.500 Moluccans also entered the Netherlands – never to return. Thus, the Lloydkade is not only a symbolic place of remembrance but also a physical location directly connected to this shared history.
