Today, during Orange the World (the International Day against Violence against Women), alderman for Care Ronald Buijt announced that visual artist Narges Mohammadi (1993) has been selected to create the monument 'Stop violence against women'. The artwork serves as a memorial for victims of (domestic) violence or femicide and draws attention to this global problem. Mohammadi's design was chosen from a sketch round. The detailed design will be presented on International Women's Day 2025, which takes place every year on March 8.

BKOR is delighted with the choice of Narges Mohammadi, who has not previously created a permanent work in the public space of Rotterdam. During the Graduation Show 2020 of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, she immediately made an impression with her graduation work consisting of 700 kilos of halva, a Persian delicacy that is mainly eaten after a funeral, to ease the pain of loss. After that, her career got off to a flying start. Cultural traditions, transience and memory play a major role in her work, which mainly consists of large installations and sculptures made from everyday materials. This year she won the 15e edition of the Volkskrant Visual Arts Prize: "The power of Narges Mohammadi's work is that it connects her personal story with the major current social issues of our time."
