Since 2018, CBK Rotterdam and Sculpture International Rotterdam (SIR) have been active with the art program in the vicinity of the Maashaven metro station Maashaven Palace. Due to the corona measures, we have not been able to run the program for some time, but at the beginning of 2022 we started again with Radio Palace Maashaven, four radio broadcasts from the Gemaal op Zuid. For example, a spectacular meeting was the unveiling of the artwork Fountain Maashaven. This fountain sprays water into the Maashaven at unexpected moments. The artwork is by Jeroen Jongeleen, who lives in Charlois.

Another plan is to relocate a special and monumental sculpture from 1964 by artist André Volten on Dordtselaan, near the Maashaven metro station. When a primary school in Schiebroek was demolished, we were approached if we wanted to keep the artwork and give it another place. Since it is a work of art by an important artist, we have saved the work and have it restored. In collaboration with Stadsontwikkeling of the Municipality of Rotterdam, we have found a beautiful spot in the central reservation of the Dordtselaan. The eight-meter high artwork can be seen from a great distance and therefore acts as a kind of marker in the neighborhood and the city.

André Volten (Andijk, 1925 – Amsterdam, 2002) was one of the most important post-war Dutch sculptors. He developed a non-figurative sculpture with a lot of stainless steel. In the 1950s and 1960s his work was characteristic of new developments in art. In public space he made many freestanding sculptures with a geometric form language. He has made seven works of art for Rotterdam, such as the well-known work Mikado (1975) in the water at Rotterdam The Hague Airport.

On Friday 22 July from 16.00 to 17.00 pm, local residents are invited to the Cultuurwerkplaats Tarwewijk (address Cillershoekstraat 1).
