Five new gateways to the city gardens of Rotterdamse Munt, designed by visual artist Michiel Jansen, will be unveiled on Friday 24 April. BKOR commissioned Jansen in 2019 to design these entrances. Arcades & Portals, the title of the work, can be seen since this week at the new location of Rotterdamse Munt on the Rosestraat.

Live stream: virtual opening Arcades & Portals
Due to the restrictions regarding the Coronavirus, this moment does not lend itself to a grand opening of Arcades & Portals. Therefore live streaming we unveiling as originally intended on Friday, April 24 at noon.

Opening by the councilor
Councilor Saïd Kasmi (Education, culture and tourism) opens the artwork and spoker word artist Carina Fernandes performs her rhyme, which she wrote especially for the city park.

Rotterdam art in public space
For this project, Rotterdamse Munt works together with BKOR, a program of CBK Rotterdam. An important pillar of CBK Rotterdam is to show art in the public space, so that residents of the city come into contact with it. This collaboration lends itself perfectly to this. A place like the city gardens of Rotterdamse Munt is a relief in the concrete jungle you find in some places.
Jansen makes with Arcades & Portals an architectural work that comes into its own thanks to the organic shapes. It offers both symbolic and literal access to the lush city gardens and contrasts with the diligent construction of the Paperclip, the building opposite the gardens of Rotterdam Mint.

Performance by Carina Fernandes
Rotterdamse Munt and CBK Rotterdam see the gardens as a specific place in the city where you can give both philosophical and poetic words. Whirlwind, centipede and spoken word artist Carina Fernandes is known as the Rotterdam CEO for Diffusion of Positive Energy and we can all use that under the current circumstances. After alderman Kasmi has opened the gates, Fernandes also carries through the live stream her rhyme in front of.

About the artist
In 2000 Michiel Jansen (1973) graduated from the Academy of Art & Design in 's-Hertogenbosch at the department of' Sculpture and other media '. He exhibits mainly within Europe in galleries and independent art spaces. His work can be found in a number of private collections and cultural organizations in the Netherlands. He is mainly concerned with installations, sculptures and collages, based on the space in which they (or he) are located or the materials with which he works. The choice of materials, method and use of form have a strong link with architecture, which may be a result of his unfinished study of Architecture in the years 1992-1994 in Eindhoven. In addition to his artistry, he has always been involved in organizing and producing and has been an active part of TAC in Eindhoven and the Nederlandsche Cacaofabriek in Helmond. After moving to Rotterdam, he founded the SingerSweatShop, an artist's building right in the center, with living, working and exhibition options. In 2013 he moved temporarily to Berlin and upon his return to Rotterdam in 2014 he focused full-time on his own work again. Since 2016 he is a member of the artist group If Paradise Is Half As Nice.

This applied artwork by Michiel Jansen was made possible by the Municipality of Rotterdam.
