From Price to Price

About the route

This walk along art in public spaces in the center of Rotterdam took the visitor to the image Reaching Out— waving visitors of the artist’s Kunsthal exhibition Matter of Place goodbye, as it were — Price waved goodbye, in his image Moments Contained at Stationsplein. This route was created in the context of the exhibition Matter of Place by Thomas J Price, which took place from October 5, 2024 to February 9, 2025 at Kunsthal Rotterdam. The sculpture Reaching Out was temporarily placed and could only be seen on the square in front of the Kunsthal during this exhibition.

Zooming in on questions of acknowledgment in contemporary society, Price’s sculptures confront us with the stereotypes of representation and identity often conveyed by traditional sculptures, like the ones included in this route.

This art historical journey through time reveals the diversity of artists' understandings of the human figure and how they played with visual language to provide viewers with some "mental homework." This artistically challenging collection is a small sample of Rotterdam's remarkable sculpture collection.
