From Price to Price

About the route

This walking tour explores art in the public space in the city centre of Rotterdam. It begins with Thomas J Price’s sculpture Reaching Out — waving visitors of the artist’s Kunsthal exhibition Matter of Place goodbye, as it were — and ends with his sculpture Moments Contained on the square in front of Central Station. Of course it can also be walked the other way around: from Central Station to the Kunsthal.

Zooming in on questions of acknowledgment in contemporary society, Price’s sculptures confront us with the stereotypes of representation and identity often conveyed by traditional sculptures, like the ones included in this route.

This art-historical journey through time shows how artists have used a wide variety of approaches to the human figure for their artworks and highlights how they played with visual language to give the spectator some ‘mental homework’. This artistically challenging selection is only a small sample of Rotterdam’s extraordinary sculpture collection.
