Untitled (Arrow) (1973) Marianne Groen
As part of the percentage scheme, this artwork by the Rotterdam artist Marianne Groen was developed for the construction of the Afrikaanderplein swimming pool. It is a humorous work with influences of pop art or minimal art from the sixties and seventies by the popular and basic form of an arrow combined with a lightning bolt of bright colors. The two and a half meter high concrete arrow stands upright on the sidewalk by the swimming pool. The lightning bolt pattern has been applied to both sides of the arrow with yellow, red, blue and white glazed tiles.
Marianne Groen (Rotterdam, 1941 - Rotterdam, 2011) was a Rotterdam artist. She attended the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam and studied at the Free Academy in The Hague. She was a sculptor, graphic artist, painter and textile artist. She worked in a mainly abstract style with repetitive and decorative patterns as a starting point.
