Sculptures. Urban embellishment in Rotterdam since 1940 is a book about 75 years of reconstruction in Rotterdam, in which the origin and growth of the Rotterdam sculpture collection are outlined. With over 1000 works of art and monuments, this collection is unique in the Netherlands. In 1940, who took the initiative to place works of art in public space? Why did banks and offices on Blaak and Coolsingel embellish their new buildings with art? How did Rotterdam arrive The destroyed city and the untitled sculpture by Naum Gabo? Which works of art do we owe to the percentage scheme? How could the city collection grow into a collection of artworks of international allure?

Erratum:
Geert Lebbing is incorrectly quoted on page 267 of the book. The sentence 'Remember the many commissions that the artist couple Loeki Metz and Huib Noorlander acquired' is based on mistakes by the author. He not only mixed up the names of Loeki (Metz) and Joeki (Simak), but also wrongly associated these three artists with preferential treatment.
