About the artwork

Since 1970 there has been an abstract sculpture made by the Rotterdam artist Ian Pieters in this green park on the Alsemstraat. It is a freestanding statue of polished stainless steel, which stands on a concrete platform. The artwork The islands is made up of round shapes and round cutouts. At the foot of the image is a cut-out shape, reminiscent of an island. Because of these shapes and the modern choice of materials, it is a striking and quirky piece of work that was created within the framework of the neighborhood enhancement fund.
